Is there anything more dreaded than a root canal? It’s unfortunate that this procedure has such a bad reputation because modern dentistry has evolved to the point that even feared procedures like root canals are safer, more efficient, and more comfortable than ever.
The team at Smile Practice Family Dentistry understands your concerns about the procedure and will do all that we can to put you at ease. Many of our patients tell us their root canal was much easier than they expected!
A root canal is needed to save your tooth from extraction. Root canals are a common procedure and millions are performed each year with a success rate of about 90%. Inside your tooth, underneath the enamel and dentin, there is a soft material called pulp that contains the nerves of your tooth. If severe decay, cracks, or trauma allow bacteria to enter this portion of the tooth, an infection occurs.
An infected tooth is usually extremely painful. Swelling and sensitivity to temperature are also common symptoms. Once an infection reaches the pulp of your tooth, root canal treatment is needed to remove the infection and save the tooth. Without treatment, the pain will get worse, and the tooth will need to be extracted.
Before we begin treatment, we make sure you are comfortable.
First, we numb your gums so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. When we are sure you are numb, the doctor will make a small hole in your tooth to access the root canal. We use state-of-the-art instruments to gently remove the infected pulp, fill and seal the tooth.
Many patients who associate root canals with pain are pleasantly surprised to find that it is the infection that causes the pain, not the procedure!
After root canal treatment, your tooth needs to be protected. Dr. Gonzalez will work with you and offer options for restoring the tooth to restore function and minimize the risk of future problems.
At Smile Practice Family Dentistry, we create high-quality dental restorations using durable materials like ceramic, porcelain, and Emax. We ensure that your new restoration looks natural, functions perfectly, and blends beautifully with your smile.
