A healthy, beautiful smile starts here
Is a missing tooth making it difficult to get out and socialize with friends and family? At Smile Practice Family Dentistry, we have seen the effect that tooth loss has on our patients. That is why we offer state-of-the-art dental implants that are designed to take the place of the missing tooth and restore function and appearance.
The loss of a tooth for any reason can be difficult to handle. It can have an impact on every part of your life from difficulty eating and speaking to feelings of embarrassment and even shame.
But you should know that tooth loss is not uncommon – the American College of Prosthodontics estimates that nearly 180 million people have at least one missing tooth and 35 million have no teeth at all.
A Healthy Tooth Replacement
Dental implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement. A bridge or denture addresses the apparent gaps in your smile, but a dental implant is much more than an esthetic solution!
The secret of a dental implant is a small titanium post that Dr. Yanela Gonzalez places surgically in your jaw here at our comfortable office. Since titanium is a biocompatible material, the body accepts it without the worry of rejection.
After placement, your implant goes through a healing process called osseointegration where it permanently fuses with surrounding bone and tissue in your jaw. Since the implant becomes part of your dental anatomy, it forms the strongest possible foundation for the restoration to which it is attached.
The most common problem with tooth loss is deterioration of the jawbone. When a healthy tooth root is in place, it stimulates the growth of healthy bone and tissue in your jaw. When you lose a tooth, the process stops, and supporting bone starts to deteriorate. A dental implant takes up the job of the lost root and prevents bone loss.
Choosing Your Restoration
As part of the implant planning process, Dr. Gonzalez will discuss your options for restoring the function and appearance of your tooth. A crown is the most common restoration for single tooth replacement. When attached to the implant, the custom-crafted porcelain crown is the visible part of the implant that restores function.
Dental implants can also be paired with a fixed bridge to take stress off adjacent teeth and prevent bone loss and gum recession. We also have tremendous success combining implants with dentures. On their own, dentures can slip and shift at the most awkward moments, causing discomfort and embarrassment. We can resolve this issue by placing implants at strategic points along your jaw and designing your denture with attachments that connect to the implants. With implants, your dentures will stay firmly in place.
